Everton ‘guilty’ of making same mistakes in loss v Leicester – Sky Sports pundit

Everton were outclassed on their own turf by a resurgent Leicester City side which saw them rise above the Toffees in the Premier League.

A Youri Tielemans bonanza on Bonfire Night and Harvey Barnes’ breakaway goal was enough to secure a 2-0 win for Brendan Rodgers’ side even though Everton had a lot of possession in their attempts to find a way back into the game.

But they couldn’t force the door open in the end and Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell slammed Frank Lampard’s side’s naivety to keep making the same errors.

Everton

“I think Everton were just guilty of giving the ball away cheaply,” Campbell said. “They weren’t understanding the space when they gave it away because what you don’t do is try and win the ball back straight away when you’ve got big gaps in behind you.

“We’ve seen Harvey Barnes get into similar positions a few times and his finishing hasn’t been great but if you keep giving good players the opportunity, you’re going to get punished.”

Chasing

In theory, those incidents don’t look clever with hindsight but Everton were chasing the game at that time and had to take such risks if they wanted to get something out of the game.

More gaps were being left because more players were in the attack so naturally those holding down the fort have to make tough decisions on whether to press or not.

Lampard won’t be changing how they go about each game based on these comments because he knows the bigger picture at play and such errors wouldn’t have been made had the score been the other way around.

A defeat at home is never ideal and especially against a side that was in the relegation zone but recent form has the Foxes far above 18th so perhaps the Toffees underestimated the challenge.

They certainly won’t be doing so again, though, as they could really have no complaints about who claimed the three points at Goodison Park.
