Everton must recall Lewis Warrington after first Fleetwood goal amid injury fears

Everton were struck with two injury blows on Saturday (5 November) as they were beaten 2-0 by Leicester City at Goodison Park.

Idrissa Gana Gueye and Amadou Onana both hobbled off the field against the Foxes and Frank Lampard revealed after the game that both players would have to undergo a scan on Monday (7 November).

If both players have to miss games long-term due to this setback, the Toffees would be left relatively short in the centre of the park so may have to recall one of their brightest young talents from loan.

Lewis Warrington has been almost an ever-present for Fleetwood Town this season and has been one of their star performers so far which he was duly rewarded for in the FA Cup as his first goal for the Cod Army helped them beat National League South side Oxford City 3-1.

A beautifully-curled strike into the top corner was an adequate way to get off the mark for the League One outfit and really highlighted his star quality that is already nearly too good for the third tier of English football.

Lampard likes to give youth a chance wherever he goes as a manager and he will be acutely aware of the progress Warrington is making under Scott Brown at Highbury.

It could soon be time for the 20-year-old to return to Finch Farm and be a constant in first-team training and matchday squads, particularly if Onana and Gueye suffer big setbacks.

There is still the roadblock of Alex Iwobi, James Garner and Abdoulaye Doucoure to contend with but Warrington really impressed the boss during pre-season and he won’t have forgotten that in a hurry.

Everton should very much consider recalling him to Merseyside when the January transfer window opens and allows such moves because he is very near at the level required to be useful in the Premier League.
