Sky Sports pundit savages Tom Davies for what he did in Everton v Bournemouth

Tim Sherwood absolutely destroyed Tom Davies for his miss in the first half during the Carabao Cup clash between Everton and Bournemouth.

The Toffees fell behind after just seven minutes after a deflected strike looped over Asmir Begovic, but had a huge chance to equalise when Davies was put through one on one a few minutes later.

But when the England Under-21 midfielder missed the target entirely with his effort, he left Sherwood furious live on Sky Sports (8 November, 19:57).

“Tom Davies goes straight down, he’s about 12 yards out when he ends up hitting the shot,” he said.

“Good through ball from Anthony Gordon and he’s clean through. Takes a touch beyond and he can’t miss. He cannot miss the target from there.

“The goalkeeper Travers lays down, just roll it into the corner. Terrible.

“It don’t matter how rusty you are, you can’t miss the target from there. That is disgusting.”

There’s clearly a reason why Lampard has settled on his preferred midfield three being Idrissa Gueye, Amadou Onana and Alex Iwobi.

The performance tonight was a shambles in all honesty, but Davies will now know why he isn’t starting games if he can’t even hit the target with chances like that.

A lack of goals has been a huge problem for the side this season and we really need the midfield to step up and start chipping in to help our struggling strikers too.

Sherwood definitely goes overboard calling it “disgusting”, but it is a terrible miss even if he has been out for a while and is seen as a defensive midfielder.

As a bare minimum he should make the goalkeeper work, but Everton would likely have wanted that chance to fall to any other player on the pitch rather than Davies. If they keep creating chances, the goals will come, but even that’s a struggle at the moment.
