Simon Jordan questions Everton transfer policy as Farhad Moshiri spends hundreds of millions

Simon Jordan has taken aim at Farhad Moshiri after his summer business with Everton sitting just one point above the relegation zone after 14 games.

The Toffees have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions and Frank Lampard has found himself under pressure with the blues looking likely to be involved in another battle against the drop.

But while speaking about Everton on talkSPORT (14 November, 11:54am), Jordan took aim at owner Moshiri for spending “hundreds of millions” on players who don’t improve the side, and then picked out a trio of forwards to criticise.

“But if you look at the team out there that Everton have become, with all the grandstandings and hundreds of millions of pounds that Moshiri has spent,” he said. “You know they’ve had Ronald Koeman in there, they had Sam Allardyce come in specifically to do them a job and keep them in the division a couple of years ago.

“They pursued Marco Silva and that didn’t work out, they had Martinez for a while. Here we are with Frank Lampard.

“I’m not entirely sure, looking at the squad of players. When you’re signing players that Brighton don’t want, and I know Brighton are a very good side, but you’re taking away a perceived goalscorer in Neal Maupay, you’re looking at Dwight McNeil from a relegated Burnley, and you’re looking at Demarai Gray who does it in flashes and is a good player but ultimately has had certain periods of time where he’s struggled, what are you expecting?

“Then you’ve got your centre forward on the front cover of GQ magazine holding a handbag. What do you expect to really see from a team?

“I know I’m being a bit flippant but that is what Everton have become right now. It’s not something I take lightly because I’m very fond of Bill and I think it’s a great football club but I don’t think they know whether they’re Arthur or Martha right now.”

Reality check?

Most Everton fans were largely happy with the business in the transfer window, with the defence and midfield strengthened and the club managing to keep hold of both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Anthony Gordon.

But as the season has progressed the defence has begun to struggle when the games became more regular, the midfield has lacked goals and the attack is seriously underperforming across all the options.

Neal Maupay has managed just one goal this season since coming from Brighton, while Gordon has looked a shadow of the player that crashed his way into the first-team last season.

With the money spent under Moshiri’s ownership, this squad shouldn’t be struggling in the way it is and it shouldn’t be battling against relegation week after week.

Jordan often seems to have it out for Everton on talkSPORT, and he definitely wasn’t a fan of Lampard’s appointment at the time or the way the fans reacted to defeat recently, but he’s definitely got a point here.
