Simon Jordan takes aim at Everton fans after Alex Iwobi incident v Bournemouth
Simon Jordan has torn into Everton fans after they threw Alex Iwobi’s shirt back at him following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday (12 November).
The Toffees fell to a sixth defeat in eight games and their second consecutive thrashing at the hands of the Cherries in just four days, leading to furious fans booing the team after the game.
Iwobi gave his shirt to a fan in the stands but saw it thrown back onto the pitch as police had to intervene, and Simon Jordan reacted live on talkSPORT (14 November, 11:54am) by criticising the fans for their actions.
“I don’t know what the question was at Everton. If Frank Lampard was the answer, I’m not entirely sure what the question was,” he said.
“They got themselves out of jail at the very last knockings at the back end of last season, and they’ve started this season inauspiciously again. But if you look at the Everton side and you look at the quality, and reading the notes on this, Alex Iwobi is one of the few players who has done well for them.
“So if fans are throwing his shirt at him off the back of a bad performance I think that’s a little disappointing because I’ve been very condemnatory of Alex Iwobi. If I was Arsenal and someone offered me £35m for Alex Iwobi I’d have sent him around in a cab.
“But he’s gone and done well for Everton in recent times, so despite the fact I don’t think he’s a world-beater he’s been an honest player for Everton.”
Harsh
It was certainly harsh of Everton fans to throw Iwobi’s shirt back at him after the game, but it wasn’t anything personal at him.
He happened to be the one who threw his shirt into the crowd and the fans had travelled south for a huge game for the second time in a number of days and were served up a shower of nonsense again.
It was simply unacceptable from the players and it was a statement from the fans that it won’t be tolerated, no matter who it is, because the team has to perform.
Everton sit one point above the relegation zone now and Lampard has come under pressure heading into the World Cup break, but there is hope he will be able to turn it around.
This break should do everyone good and let the anger simmer a little before things boil over, but they absolutely need to get things back on track starting from boxing day.
