Rodrigo Becao contract squabbles leave door open for Everton move

The door is wide open for Everton to make a move for rumoured transfer target Rodrigo Becao with the Brazilian’s contract negotiations stalling, according to Messaggeroveneto.

Becao has been refusing to sign a new contract with his current club Udinese with his current contract expiring in June 2024.

The report suggests that Becao may have rejected his club’s latest contract proposals due to the “tempting” interest from Everton, Tottenham and Inter Milan.

“Rodrigo Becao has been refusing since the beginning of October, when Gino Pozzo offered him a renewal with the current deadline set for June 2024,” as quoted by messaggeroveneto.

“Becao is the player with the most transfer market, as demonstrated by the recent interest from Everton, Tottenham and Inter, and perhaps it is precisely because of the tempting offers already received in the summer that the Salvador de Bahia defender, who will soon turn 27 on January 19, did not sign the renewal.”

Strength in depth.

The Brazilian has been out of his Udinese side for some time now, indicating that a switch away from Italy may be on the cards soon.

Everton could do a lot worse in the transfer market than Becao, he’s tried and tested and would be a solid addition to Frank Lampard’s defensive ranks.

His reluctance to sign a contract renewal past 2024 bodes well for any chance the Toffees have of signing the 26-year-old.

However, sorting out the Blues’ defence is the least of Lampard’s problems right now and it is actually an area of the pitch where Everton have thrived this season.

The likes of Conor Coady, James Tarkowski, Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko have all been performing well and there’s no need to take them out of the starting XI at the moment.

Despite this, it never hurts to have as many solid options as possible in your backline, especially with rumours linking the likes of Yerry Mina and Michael Keane away from Goodison Park.
