Dwight McNeil left incensed by incident in Everton win over Western Sydney Wanderers
Dwight McNeil was “absolutely furious” after he was the victim of a heavy foul in the 5-1 Everton friendly win in Australia on Wednesday, Joe Thomas reports.
An Anthony Gordon hat-trick, along with goals from Neal Maupay and Tom Cannon saw the Toffees improve significantly from their goalless draw with Celtic to defeat Western Sydney Wanderers.
But a lunge from Gabriel Cleur enraged the summer signing from Burnley in one of the few negatives from a positive performance.
Reporting live from Australia on Twitter, Liverpool Echo reporter Thomas said: “Dwight McNeil absolutely furious as Gabriel Cleur lunges at him, full on. Cleur gets a booking and that wasn’t great.
“McNeil had to be pulled away after being left incensed by that”.
Players are never impressed when they are fouled but even more so in a friendly match, and with Everton well up and cruising in the second half McNeil would have been justified in being upset.
The 22-year-old hasn’t had the impact he would have liked since his summer move yet, although he has scored in two wins across 15 appearances.
But he hasn’t managed to break into the team as a regular starter, so an injury at this point would likely disrupt the rest of his debut season at Goodison.
The six-week break for the World Cup has given Frank Lampard the opportunity to work with his players to improve the situation at the club, having come into the lay off on the back of some terrible form.
He will hope that the friendly run outs on the other side of the world might help to instil some confidence in his attackers, who have struggled badly of late.
Despite coming under fire for negative tactics in the draw with Celtic, the 5-1 win on Wednesday is more what fans would hope to see, and a Gordon hat-trick might just suggest that the young star could return to form when the Premier League starts up again.
