Everton shareholder aims dig at Roberto Martinez as Belgium lose to Morocco at World Cup
Mike Parry has sent a little dig to former Everton boss Roberto Martinez after Belgium were beaten by Morocco at the World Cup on Sunday (27 November).
Martinez is currently the manager of the Red Devils national team and oversaw a poor 1-0 win over Canada in the opening game of their group stage, before they were soundly beaten 2-0 in the second game.
The Spaniard was linked with a return to Goodison Park when Rafa Benitez was sacked in January before the club opted for Frank Lampard instead, and Parry was quick to let Martinez know that he wouldn’t have been that popular had he returned.
“It was always going to be downhill for Roberto Martinez after he left the mighty Everton…” he wrote on his personal Twitter account (27 November).
Belgium now face elimination at the group stages, with a final fixture against Croatia to come later this week with defeat meaning they will be out.
Shots fired
Martinez had a great time at Goodison Park for a long while, but the way it ended was quite bitter sweet and the fact that people didn’t want him to return last year wasn’t a surprise.
Toffees fans are now revelling in the fact he is struggling at international level, a job that should have seen him win silverware at some point considering the calibre of player that he has had at his disposal.
Belgium have had players like Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Axel Witsel and more in the prime of their careers and he never even managed to reach a final.
He has a great idea of how to play football, but he doesn’t quite execute it and is too stubborn to change that and that’s ultimately his downfall.
Now we have Lampard who has some similar issues but is only getting better as a football manager being so early in his career, and the improvements for the team are there for many to see, so it’s fair to say we made the right decision.
