Wayne Rooney gushes over Everton ace Jordan Pickford, predicts if he will be rested for England v Wales World Cup clash
Wayne Rooney has been left impressed by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s performances at the World Cup for England.
The former Manchester United and Toffees midfielder does not see him being rested by Gareth Southgate for the clash against Wales on 29 November.
The Three Lions have all but qualified for the next round and while rotation is expected, Rooney does not see the manager tinkering with his first choice goalkeeper.
He told Sports 18 (29 November, 11:21), “I’ll pick Jordan Pickford still. He’s done well [at the World Cup].”
Keepers do not get as fatigued as outfield players and it does not make sense to take him off just to give someone a game.
However, if at 60 minutes, Southgate feels that the game is won, he can take out all the players he wants for their Round of 16 clash.
On this occasion, we might see Pickford coming off but we think it’s likely he plays every minute of every game like he did at Euro 2020.
Hopefully, he goes on to have as good a competition as he did then when he conceded just one goal from open play all tournament.
He’s already conceded two in the first game, but has not made errors and looks like an assured presence on the ball which is very important.
There have been talks about Everton being willing to cash in on him if a big offer comes in, but that does not seem to be affecting him one bit and that’s good news for all parties.
