Everton squad has failed to solve ‘big problem’, no choice but to spend – Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former Everton striker Kevin Campbell as our exclusive columnist. Each week the former Toffees captain will be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Goodison Park…

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness issues mean Everton must spend to solve their “big problem” in attack since the squad hasn’t answered the call, according to Kevin Campbell.

Frank Lampard’s side have a major issue with scoring goals currently, with one in the 4-1 Carabao Cup defeat at Bournemouth the lone occurrence in the past five matches in all competitions, while the former England striker’s return to the starting line-up ended up only lasting four matches.

Former captain Campbell, a Sky Sports pundit, is not confident that answers lie within the options currently available at Goodison, meaning the only option is to bring in vital reinforcements in January.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “The problem’s been [evident] with the lads that have been there anyway so it has to be addressed.

“We know Dominic Calvert-Lewin can solve a big problem, but the problem [with him] is he can’t keep himself fit.

“So what the manager is going to have to do is go out there and get some people in who can do the job.

“Unfortunately you can’t rely on Calvert-Lewin at the moment. You’re going to have to allow him to get himself fit and get himself right.

“That’s really been Everton’s big problem, scoring goals. They’re going to have to address it for sure.”

Anthony Gordon is the only attacking player who has shown anything like the kind of sustained performances that could deliver a spark up front, but that trailed off weeks ago.

He did score a hat-trick against Western Sydney Wanderers during the World Cup break, but even a return to form for him isn’t likely to be enough to carry the Everton team through the rest of the season if Calvert-Lewin isn’t available.

Barring a sudden and unexpected explosion from Neal Maupay or Dwight McNeil there is only really flashes of quality from Demarai Gray, who too often lacks the end product, so that leaves January signings as the only option.
