Journalist reveals scary moment for Everton defender Ben Godfrey

Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas revealed a heart-in-the-mouth moment involving Everton defender Ben Godfrey in a Blues Under-21s clash on 30 November against Mansfield.

Godfrey lined up for the Everton Under-21s for the second time since he suffered a long-term injury that has kept him on the sidelines for months.

Thomas confessed to a fan asking about how Godfrey was performing that the defender was caught late and left him with his heart in his mouth.

“OK, he’s playing on the right of three centre-backs and most of Mansfield’s better attacks have come through the middle/down left,” said Thomas initially.

“Picked out Cannon with a nice ball over top. Was caught late in first half and heart was in mouth but he seems OK.”

Everton

Never nice.

It’s never nice watching a player come back from a long-term injury and it always feels like they are walking on eggshells throughout the games.

Godfrey, fortunately, seems to have got through this one unscathed and hopefully he can now make a good run at Frank Lampard’s first team.

The 24-year-old provides Lampard with an interesting weapon to use and his athleticism and pace could be a perfect cog for the Englishman to utilise.

A three-centre-back system perhaps? The Blues definitely need some fresh ideas to liven up their campaign, this could be something to do just that.

There is obviously no chance of Godfrey ousting Conor Coady or James Tarkowski from the Blues’ starting XI, but lining him up alongside them could be worthwhile.

Arguably, there is no better Premier League pairing than the Toffees duo for Godfrey to learn the tricks of the trade from and this would be great for Everton moving forward.
