Everton want to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in January

Everton want to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha in the January transfer window, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

The Brazilian ace has come on the market after a lack of regular game time at the Wanda Metropolitano, and the Toffees are one of four Premier League teams keen to take him away from Diego Simeone’s squad.

According to Moretto, who has previously written for Sports Illustrated, Everton are joined in the race to sign the 23-year-old by Aston Villa, Wolves and Leeds United and no deal is closed yet between any parties.

“The bid for Matheus Cunha opens,” Moretto wrote on his personal Twitter account (3 December).

“Aston Villa are interested, as we reported a few days ago, but Lopetegui’s Wolves push hard and take the lead. Leeds and Everton, further away, but in the race. Nothing is 100% closed yet.”

Everton need goals in their starting attack, but as much as that they need creativity and X-factor in their attack to help move them away from a relegation battle.

Cunha isn’t a prolific goalscorer, but he does know how to finish if the opportunity arises but what makes him talented is his great versatility to play across the front line and his excellent dribbling.

He is comfortable taking his man on all over the pitch, has great physical attributes and pace and can use both feet too making him a constant threat. What Frank Lampard will also love however, is that he is constantly running and working hard off the ball too.

Considering the team is currently just one point off the relegation zone, it will be a tough sell to convince him to join but he would one of the first names on the team sheet which is what he wants.

If there is money to spend to get a deal done for Cunha then Everton should be pushing the boat out, as he could be the difference between Premier League and Championship football next season.
