Richard Keys slams Everton for signing Neal Maupay from Brighton after Newcastle transfer update emerges

Richard Keys slams Everton for targetting the wrong Brighton player as Newcastle reportedly are keen on buying Leandro Trossard.

The Toffees bought Neal Maupay from the Seagulls over the summer and Keys believes that the Belgium international should’ve been the one to sign.

The Northern Echo reported on 31 October that Newcastle now want to sign Trossard in January and Brighton value him at £30million.

Everton

Keys said on the In The Thick Of It podcast, via HITC, “I read that Newcastle have stepped up their interest in Leandro Trossard. I think Everton got the wrong (Maupay) one.”

To which Andy Gray said, “They might have done, yes. We might have done.”

Big mistake

It was an eventful transfer window for Everton but it certainly had its fair share of mistakes that the fans will not be happy about.

While signing a striker was important and they eventually did sign one, they signed someone who’s arguably one of the worst finishers in the Premier League for an attacking player over the past few seasons.

His xG tally makes for awful reading as he’s underperformed it by over 10 goals since moving to the Amex Stadium from Brentford in 2019.

These aren’t numbers that tell you he’s a good striker and a wide attacker was also needed which made Trossard the sensible pick.

Big clubs were in for Anthony Gordon and despite not really having an exceptional goal-scoring season, they were willing to pay over the odds to sign him.

Chelsea were even willing to pay £60million for him, something that stunned Gary Neville, along with all of us, but the Everton hierarchy even then did not consider it when they could’ve sold him and signed Trossard for half that money.
