Everton ace Andros Townsend rubbishes ‘crazy’ Tottenham suggestion as £150m Harry Kane verdict shared

Andros Townsend has claimed England’s homegrown talent doesn’t get enough credit with the Everton man suggesting Harry Kane gets unfair criticism.

Kane got off the mark in Qatar against Senegal and will be looking to add to his tally when the Three Lions take on France on Saturday evening (10 December).

Townsend has called out people for referring to Tottenham’s £150million price tag as “crazy” with the England captain consistently scoring 20 goals in the Premier League.

“One thing strikes me from watching England at World Cups over the years – we don’t give the home-grown talent enough love,” said Townsend (The Daily Mirror, 6 Dec, page 54).

“Look at Harry Kane, the has been scoring 20-plus goals in the Premier League for the best part of six years. But when Tottenham wanted £150million for him, everyone said they were crazy.

“Talk about his Golden Boot in Russia four years ago and some people argue he wasn’t up to much.”

Not wrong

Opinions can change very quickly in football and it’s no surprise to see a love-in for Kane now the World Cup has started. The striker has proven himself at the very highest level, and it does seem that after one bad game he’s back in the spotlight.

As for Townsend, it does feel as if he will head into the broadcasting industry when his career does come to a close. We often see the Everton winger appearing on TV and conducting various interviews with multiple broadcasters. He likes to voice his opinion, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he follows many ex-professionals into the world of full-time punditry.

Everton

ITV commentator Seb Hutchinson recently told the Everton winger to “get back to the day job” (ITV4 coverage, 2 December, 8.17pm), after Townsend had been involved with their coverage of the World Cup. With his contract up in the summer of 2023, it looks increasingly unlikely the 31-year-old will remain at Goodison Park beyond the summer of 2023.
