Everton need to blow Aston Villa out of water to sign Matheus Cunha in January

Everton need to bolster their forward department in January, and Frank Lampard must look to beat other clubs to sign Atletico Madrid attacker Matheus Cunha in January.

Matteo Moretto, a journalist who has previously written for publications such as Sports Illustrated, claimed on 3 December on his personal Twitter account that Everton, among others, are in the race to sign Cunha who is looking to leave the Spanish club in January for more regular football.

Leeds United and Aston Villa are also in the race, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are making early progress to secure his signature.

Fabrizio Romano said on the Here We Go Podcast on 5 December that Wolves are negotiating a deal for the 23-year-old, but it’s still an open race as other clubs are keeping an eye on him.

Striker necessary

The Toffees need to sign a new striker who can make an impact. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries once again, and the club will be doomed if they take a gamble on his fitness.

Summer signing Neal Maupay has proved to be a flop so far, and thus a new face is required. The Brazilian international is a talented attacker, and all he needs is games under his belt, something Frank Lampard can provide.

Versatile

Cunha is a versatile forward who can also play as a left winger if needed. He is good at dribbling and finishing.

The Brazilian can set set-pieces, and he is brilliant with his crossing abilities. Like a modern-day forward, he puts in a lot of defensive shifts and should fit in well at Goodison Park.

Price

Cunha joined Atletico in 2021, so the Rojiblancos are likely to demand a decent transfer fee for him. According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, it would require around £15 million to sign him.

The Toffees should look to sell some of their fringe players to fund the move for Cunha. The price is within their budget, and the Toffees shouldn’t hesitate about signing him.

The likes of Villa and Leeds could try their luck as well, but Everton should look to blow them out of the park by presenting a tempting bid in January.
