PSV successful in Everton talks to keep Jarrad Branthwaite, Roma kept at bay

Jarrad Branthwaite is set to remain at PSV Eindhoven for the remainder of the 2022/23 season after talks with Everton over the 20-year-old’s future, according to Eindhovens Dagblad.

Calcio Mercato reported (9 December) that Branthwaite was eager to see his loan agreement come to an end after not being given adequate gametime at the Eredivisie club.

However, it’s now been suggested (Eindhovens Dagblad, 11 December) that PSV have managed to retain the 20-year-old, with there now being a “definitive” agreement in place. It’s also understood that Roma were interested in taking the young defender on a temporary basis.

Game time

It’s now really important for the youngster to get some more minutes for the Dutch club after only featuring eight times for the Eredivisie side so far in the 2022/23 season.

He’s at a stage in his development where he needs to be playing regular football if he wants to make an impact for Everton in the future. He has played in PSV’s last three fixtures, so there could well be hope that he will feature more in the second half of the campaign.

Everton

Some discussions must have taken place between Branthwaite and the decision-makers at PSV to confirm that he would be given more first chances in the second half of the season.

A return to Goodison Park was probably never on the cards, with Frank Lampard currently well-stocked when it comes to defensive options. James Tarkowski and Conor Coady have been superb, and right now it would be hard for the defender to get into the first-team picture.
