David Ornstein shares major transfer update with Everton long-term admirers of Atletico Madrid ace Matheus Cunha

Everton are “long-term admirers” of Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha and would like to sign him in January, according to David Ornstein.

The Toffees are looking to bolster their forward line during the winter window after netting just 11 goals in their 15 Premier League games this season and the Brazilian has emerged as a potential option.

Writing in his weekly column for The Athletic (12 December), Ornstein reported that Lampard would like to bring him in either on loan or permanently, but it’s currently unclear if the player would be open to the move.

“Everton are long-term admirers and would like to bring Cunha to Goodison Park this winter,” he wrote.

“It is not clear if they are in a position to buy him or would need to structure a package differently, nor whether the 23-year-old would ultimately pick Frank Lampard’s side.”

Please

Cunha is a super talented player and Everton need someone like him to really take them up a level and pull them away from the relegation zone.

His creativity is undoubtedly his best asset but he also works incredibly hard defensively, which is part of the reason why Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone wanted him so badly initially.

There will be plenty of competition for his signature in the Premier League, with Wolves, Aston Villa and Leeds United all showing interest too so it won’t be easy to get him to join.

But all of those sides are also in a potential relegation battle this season, and he would arguably get the most game time at Goodison Park with Neal Maupay struggling to make an impact and Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling for fitness.

Lampard has shown he can make the team solid defensively, now he needs that final piece to get us going forward better and we’ll be far more comfortable.
