Liverpool Echo journalist wowed by Everton sensation Tom Cannon after 4-2 defeat v Lincoln City

Everton Under-21s lost 4-2 against Lincoln City in the Papa John’s Trophy on Tuesday (13 December) with Tom Cannon making a really good impression once again.

Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas hailed Cannon for his “stunning” strike, adding that his finish “was brutal”, and gave him an 8/10 rating.

Francis Okoronkwo scored the other goal for Everton, but it wasn’t enough in the end as the Toffees are crashed out of the competition.

“Put Everton ahead with a stunning strike from the edge of the area. Had the time to take the ball through on goal but his confidence is sky high and his finish was brutal. Minutes earlier he had turned provider for the equaliser after pulling off down the right and crossing to Okoronkwo,” wrote Thomas for Liverpool Echo.

Impressive yet again

The 19-year-old has once again got his name on the scoresheet and he is leaving Frank Lampard no choice but to give a chance for the senior side.

It was his fourth goal of the EFL Trophy campaign against Lincoln City. He has taken his total tally to ten goals in 16 appearances and could solve the striking issues for the senior side.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only managed to hit the gym this week as he steps up his recovery, and it is still not clear when he can return to action. Summer signing Neal Maupay has proved to be a big disappointment since joining the club from Brighton.

The Toffees will be looking to sign a new striker, but giving Cannon a chance makes a lot of sense.

Salomon Rondon could leave the club in the January transfer after he has dropped down the pecking order, and it could open the door for Cannon.

Cannon is a target for League One side Sheffield Wednesday, as per Alan Nixon, but Lampard should look to use him now instead of letting him go out on loan.
