Sheffield Wednesday want to sign Everton striker Tom Cannon on loan in January, according to newspaper journalist Alan Nixon.

The youngster has impressed during the mid-season break due to the World Cup while featuring with the first-team on the tour of Australia, and has sparked interest from some Football League clubs looking to add goals to their squad.

Now writing on his Patreon account, the journalist says the Owls have entered the race for the 19-year-old and are hopeful of beating Fleetwood to his signature.

Everton

“Meanwhile Sheffield Wednesday have joined Fleetwood in the hunt for young striker Tom Cannon on loan,” he wrote (11 December).

Cannon so far has netted ten goals and registered two assists in 16 appearances for the Everton Under-21’s in all competitions this season.

Talent

Everton need goals in their first-team, but Cannon isn’t ready to be able to deliver those yet and he finds himself way down the pecking order behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Neal Maupay and even Anthony Gordon.

With Championship side Sheffield Wednesday and League One outfit Fleetwood showing interest, it would suggest that he could go out on loan and play regularly in the men’s game rather than youth football.

That would great aid his development at Goodison Park, and would show Everton what kind of striker they really have on their hands.

It’s worked for Ellis Simms recently who has been shining elsewhere, and Cannon will learn a lot more from battling with defenders in a lower division than dominating everyone in the reserves.

Any offers should certainly be considered by the club in January, because it could be the start of something great for the future of the player and Everton Football Club.
