Tom Cannon to shoot into Everton first-team as he scores yet again for U21s

Everton sensation Tom Cannon has yet again got on the scoresheet for the Toffees under-21s – and the young striker will soon leave Frank Lampard no choice but to give him a first team shot.

Cannon netted his fourth goal of the EFL trophy campaign against Lincoln City. The 19-year-old has managed ten goals in and two assists in 16 appearances, and right now Lampard could look to Cannon to solve his striking issues.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury problems continue to plague his career and Neal Maupay has been a disappointment since his summer arrival from Brighton. A striker will be high on Lampard’s wish list, but potentially giving Cannon a chance could be a smart move from the Everton boss.

Newspaper journalist Alan Nixon has revealed (Patreon, 11 December) that Salomon Rondon is likely to leave Goodison Park in January, and that could well open the door for the 19-year-old to be fast-tracked into the first team scene.

However, Nixon has also suggested that Cannon is a target for League One side Sheffield Wednesday, with the Hillsborough side keen on a loan move for the striker.

Although a loan move would be good for youngster, getting him involved in first team proceedings could aid his development in a much better way. The Toffees will be able to keep a closer eye on him and ensure he is looked after in the correct manner.

Too often we see younger players loaned out into the EFL only for clubs to neglect them of game time. That could well be the case with Cannon, with Sheffield Wednesday hunting down the automatic promotion spots in League One.

Furthermore, Kevin Thelwell has been eager to focus on the academy since his arrival on Merseyside and getting one of Toffees’ younger prospects involved in the first team is exactly what the director of football is after.
