England bid to hire Everton manager Frank Lampard as Jamie Carragher shares controversial tweet
Everton manager Frank Lampard has been linked with the England job, and exit speculation has become relevant after Jamie Carragher’s controversial tweet.
England were dumped out of the World Cup against France on 10 December where they lost 2-1, and it led to many wondering whether Gareth Southgate will continue in his role.
The Daily Mail [12 December] reported that the FA will consider Lampard as an option if Southgate decides to quit his role as the England manager, although he did a brilliant job.
Sky Sports pundit Carragher, tweeted on 13 December that the next manager for England should be an English, and it has sparked controversy.
The obvious criticism is why would that be the criteria in the first place? A manager should be picked based on his ability and not nationality. When the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel are available, why England should not go after those names?
There are opposite arguments to it, and those are equally valid.
Rory Smith, a journalist working for the New York Times suggested on Twitter that international football is a “test of the relative strength of a country’s football culture.”
If a country cannot produce its own managers, then it suggests there is something wrong within the system. And this is where Lampard’s situation becomes interesting.
The likes of Lampard and Steven Gerrard could be lured to manage England, which could be a more prestigious job.

The manager is not scrutinised on a daily basis, and Lampard will get loads of time to find a system to work with a bunch of players who are already top-class at their respective clubs.
Lampard has done relatively well with Everton and Chelsea, and he could be willing to try his luck at international stages.
There are managers who want to get involved in day-to-day business, and for them, club football is the drug. If that’s the situation with Lampard, it’s better for him to continue where he is right now.
