Everton secret is out as Tom Cannon ‘almost certainly going to be in squad for Wolves’

Tom Cannon will “almost certainly” be in Frank Lampard’s Everton squad to play Wolves on Boxing Day, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas.

Everton will return to Premier League action on 26 December with Cannon, 19, bang in form after scoring his 11th goal of the season for the Under-21s on Tuesday night (13 December.

The Aintree-born striker netted in Everton’s 4-2 defeat away at Lincoln City in the Papa John’s Trophy, leading to Thomas writing on the Liverpool Echo website that the teenager is “unable to stay out of headlines” and the “secret is finally out” about his ability to find the back of the net.

Thomas added on Twitter that Cannon is almost guaranteed to be in Lampard’s matchday squad when the Blues welcome Wolves to Goodison Park in less than two weeks’ time.

On fire

Cannon’s form for the Under-21s this season has been mightily impressive.

The youngster has scored six times in 10 Premier League 2 appearances this season, adding a further five goals in five Papa John’s Trophy outings.

It shows that he’s able to score regularly against League One and League Two teams, meaning that he should be at least good enough to play for a Championship side if he’s loaned out in January.

But in truth, he should be playing for Everton.

Everton

If Lampard is going to keep persisting with Salomon Rondon, he might as well pack in management now because why would you keep trying with an ageing player who’s clearly never been good enough for the Premier League when a young hotshot like Cannon is rising through the ranks?

Cannon made his Premier League debut in the 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth in the final game before the World Cup break.

His league appearances for the Toffees should hopefully double by the end of Boxing Day.

If Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Neal Maupay aren’t providing the goods up front, Cannon is a surefire way to get the Blues back in scoring form.
