Everton to confirm new Anthony Gordon contract this week, ‘significant pay rise’

Everton are set to confirm a new long-term contract for Anthony Gordon this week after the 21-year-old attracted attention from Chelsea in the summer, according to INews.

The Daily Mail reported (23 August) that the West London club were willing to spend £60million on the winger, with Gordon eager to make the move down south.

However, it’s believed the Toffees are getting ready to confirm Gordon’s new deal with a significant pay rise on the cards (INews, 21 December). It’s also understood that the signs from the 21-year-old are “positive” as the Toffees look to Gordon to ease their goalscoring woes.

Time to stand up

Gordon’s form has been up and down so far in the 2022/23 season and it’s now time for him to show his worth for the Toffees. Considering his poor performances of late, it’s remarkable that Chelsea were willing to spend £60million on the winger.

The summer saga clearly got to his head and was a distraction. He won’t be going anywhere in January and it’s now up to the winger to get his head down and get back to his best. Frank Lampard is desperate for more firepower to be added to his ranks, but utilising Gordon in a more central role could be an option.

Gordon has previously shown his ability to finish well, and if he can receive the ball in dangerous areas he will be a threat. Regardless, Everton do need to add more firepower in January with Lampard’s current striking options leaving a lot to be desired.

Neal Maupay has been a disappointing addition and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been plagued by the same issues. A consistent goal threat is needed if Everton want to avoid another relegation battle at the end of the season.
