Frank Lampard drives new Everton deal for Anthony Gordon as Chelsea transfer update emerges

Frank Lampard is the driving force behind Anthony Gordon signing a new long-term contract with Everton, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The Toffees saw off strong interest from Tottenham and Chelsea in the summer for the England Under-21 winger, and he now looks set to put pen to paper on a new long-term deal at Goodison Park this week.

Gordon had his head turned in the summer, but according to ex-Daily Star journalist Phillips, who was speaking to GiveMeSport (22 December), he now sees staying at Everton as his best option.

Everton

“Lampard is driving this contract extension. I’m sure that it’ll be done now because of Lampard,” he said.

“Gordon sees staying at Everton as probably the best thing for him to do right now.

“I’m sure Lampard will get that one done and dusted. There’s no recent Chelsea interest to worry about.”

Backing

There has been plenty of different scenarios this season in which Everton fans have either backed Gordon to the hilt or simply had enough of him.

He has struggled badly this season, with more bookings than goals and assists combined despite playing in the vast majority of games so far.

But Lampard is clearly a big fan of the player and sees him as a huge part of the future of Everton, and therefore the club are doing the right thing by backing his decision making and tying the player to a new long-term deal.

During the winter break Gordon has shown a good level of commitment and his performance levels have improved, finding the net in Australia and the recent behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa.

Now he must transfer those performances to the Premier League and help get the team out of hole, just like he did last season.
