Finance expert hits out at Everton relationship with journalists amid £170m confusion
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has hit out at Everton over the club’s relationship with journalists over their alleged £372million loss in the three years leading up to 2021.
The £372million figure is £170million more than financial fair play rules allow for and Goodison News had previously been told by finance expert Daniel Plumley that the Toffees could well be taken to court after Burnley and Leeds complained about the financial situation.
Maguire has since suggested the club have not been willing to answer questions as to why the losses they posted were so much more than the Premier League average during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I think it’s very difficult to say where Everton got £170million worth of Covid-related costs from and it’s fair to say they don’t have the best relationships with journalists,” said Maguire (Price of Football Podcast, 8m 5s, 29 December)
“You and I both know journalists who have been not given the replies that they felt were appropriate, so it’s a funny one.”
Not good
Transparency and openness to the fans is what’s required from the Everton board at the moment. It’s unclear whether the Toffees are under investigation or not, however, if they aren’t there’s a good chance they will face some sort of scrutiny from a higher authority in the future.
The figures just don’t add up when being compared to the rest of the Premier League. The one positive for the club is that it appears Burnley have given up in their pursuit of enforcing legal action on the Merseysiders after their relegation to the Championship.

A new owner and fresh faces in the boardroom would certainly be a positive for Evertonians, however, at the moment it’s difficult to see any new investor being keen to take a majority stake in the club with the potential financial issues which are rumbling on behind-the-scenes.
Furthermore, the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock also provides another dimension to any takeover of the club.
