Rangers want to sign Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in 2023

Rangers want to sign Everton goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the summer transfer window as Michael Beale eyes a replacement for Allan McGregor, according to Alex Crook.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper’s contract at Everton comes to a close in the summer of 2023, and he’s previously stated that he’s happy on Merseyside (INews, 27 October).

TalkSPORT reporter Crook has since revealed (Twitter, 29 December) that the 63-time Bosnian international is being eyed by the Gers ahead of the summer window.

Rangers are also understood to be tracking Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford, with the 20-year-old currently impressing on loan at Bolton Wanderers (The Daily Mail, 30 December).

One in one out

If Begovic does depart, it feels as if it could well be one in and one out for Everton, with potentially a younger shot-stopper coming through the door to provide competition for Jordan Pickford. The England number one’s future has also been an area of speculation in recent weeks, with talks over a new contract yet to get underway.

Pickford’s current deal comes to a close in the summer of 2024 and the longer a new deal goes unsigned, the more clubs will begin to circle. Manchester United could potentially be looking for a replacement for David De Gea and it’s been suggested Pickford is now a “primary target” for the Red Devils (The Mirror, 29 December).

Everton

Losing Pickford would be a huge blow for the Toffees after his performances in the last two seasons. He was a huge part of them staying up in the 2021/22 season and if he did depart, the club would have to spend money on a goalkeeper to come in and make the same impact.
