Everton must sign striker in January to appease ‘brilliant’ fans – BBC pundit

Clinton Morrison believes that Everton should have their whole focus on just one position when the January transfer window swings open.

The former Premier League striker has demanded that the Toffees try to appease their loyal fanbase by signing a new goalscorer who can fill the void should Dominic Calvert-Lewin remain an injury liability.

The England international has been a bit-part player this season due to injuries and Neal Maupay has not provided the goals in response.

Everton

“You are only as good as you’re strikers at the end of the day,” Morrison said on the BBC Football Daily podcast. “They are the ones who put the ball in the back of the net.

“They need to get Calvert-Lewin fit, that’s what they need to do, he needs a run of games and they will start to climb the league table.

“They’ve got the wingers to create chances but they need to start contributing too. The midfield is strong and the defenders are too.

“They’ve got to go and do business in January if they want to stay in this league because the fans are brilliant, they are like a 12th man, they’re fantastic but Frank is under pressure and he has to start delivering.”

Go big

Farhad Moshiri doesn’t really have much of a choice but to spend the money on a new striker because he could easily be the boss of a Championship if he doesn’t.

Calvert-Lewin’s troublesome season in more ways than one has heavily curtailed Frank Lampard’s initial plans and forced them into spending money on Maupay in the summer.

Everton

The manager can only wait for so long for the England international to find his best form again before he has to pull the trigger and look at alternative options.

The recall of Ellis Simms from Sunderland is perhaps the biggest hint that he is ready to experiment at the top of the pitch and Tom Cannon could be on course for games too.

The pressure for places at Everton is high but not for a good reason and Lampard would much prefer to have left Simms in the North East because his current attackers were doing the business but needs must at this dangerous time.
