Owen Hargreaves gushes over Everton forward Demarai Gray for his ‘fabulous’ goal v Manchester City

Owen Hargreaves was left stunned by Demarai Gray’s finish as Everton managed a 1-1 draw against Manchester City away at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday (31 December) in the Premier League.

The BT Sport pundit hailed the goal as “fabulous” on Premier League Tv production (31 December, post-match), adding that the 26-year-old “has got so much ability”.

City took the lead through Erling Haaland in the 24th minute, but Gray’s outstanding effort ensured the Toffees avoided their fifth successive defeat.

“Brilliant goal. Brilliant individual play,” said Hargreaves on Premier League Tv production (31 December, post-match).

“Careless from Rodri, rarely you see making him a mistake like that.

“Take nothing away from Gray, that is fabulous, and he’s got so much ability.”

Smart

Gray has made 17 appearances in the Premier League and has two goals to his name so far.

He is capable of conjuring up moments of brilliance like this, but he lacks consistency. It could be due to his lack of confidence, but he should be making the best use of his talents.

It was indeed a fabulous goal from Gray. He hurriedly took the ball inside the Manchester City box and gave the impression that he will pass it to Vitaliy Mykolenko who was on the overlap.

But he made a swift turn and selected his spot in the far corner, and finished it with great aplomb. That was a special strike from him.

Frank Lampard got his tactics absolutely spot on here. Until that point, City were dominant and they had the lead.

But the Toffees didn’t panic. They kept the shape intact and got the goal. City came close to winning it, but the Toffees’ defence stayed resolute.
