Everton lead race to sign £16m Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres in January

Everton are leading the race to sign Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres in January, but face competition from other Premier League clubs.

The Toffees are keen to sign a new striker in the winter transfer window having struggled for goals so far this season, with Demarai Gray leading their scoring charts with four goals.

But while Leeds, Crystal Palace and Wolves are said to be interested in the Sweden international, a report from LeedsAllOver claims that it’s Frank Lampard’s side that are currently in pole position to seal his signature.

Everton

Leeds All Over sources understand that he is someone high on Leeds’ list of striker targets, but as it stands Everton are thought to be leading the race for his signature,” they wrote (2 January).

Excellent

Everton need a striker desperately and Gyokeres could represent some really clever business if they can get the deal over the line early in the window.

Gyokeres is one of the top scorers in the Championship this season having netted 12 goals in 25 games this season despite being firmly in mid-table.

At 6ft 2 with good mobility, strength and a great finishing instinct he would be a solid addition to this side at Goodison Park in the current system that Lampard looks to field.

However he would represent somewhat of a gamble at £16m, considering he has never played at the highest level and would be coming into a struggling team in mid-season and asked to lead the line.

There are also question marks as to whether or not he is better than Neal Maupay, but fresh faces are needed and he has proven he can find the net so it is definitely a worthwhile gamble if no other sure-fire options emerge during talks between Lampard and Kevin Thelwell.
