Jordan Pickford boost for Everton after Manchester United David de Gea contract admission
Jordan Pickford’s future at Everton has been an area of speculation in recent weeks – but the latest news from Manchester United could see the Toffees keep hold of their star man.
United have been long-term admirers of the 28-year-old with The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath suggesting (24 September) Pickford was being monitored as a potential replacement for David de Gea.
The Spaniard is in the final year of his current contract, however, United do have the option to extend his current deal by another year. Although it has been suggested (The Telegraph, 20 December) the Old Trafford board are eager for the 32-year-old to take a significant cut on his current £375,000-a-week wage.

It was initially unclear whether the Spaniard would be willing to accept reduced terms from United, and if he did decide to depart, it could have led Erik ten Hag to target Pickford as a replacement. However, De Gea has provided a positive update on his future at Old Trafford.
“It’s going to end in a good way,” said the Spaniard on his latest discussions with United over a new deal (Manchester Evening News, 4 January).

If De Gea does remain at Manchester United there’s every chance they will turn their attention away from Pickford and onto other potential transfer targets in more pressing positions. For Everton, keeping hold of England’s number one is a must if they want to improve in the coming years.
He’s in the prime of his career and has been a vital part of their success in recent seasons. Ensuring they tie him down to a new deal is absolutely essential. Although, with there being a real threat of relegation this season, it’s hard to envisage Pickford staying at the club should the Toffees drop into the Championship.
