Everton defender Mason Holgate linked with January transfer to Nottingham Forest – Sky Sports journalist

Everton defender Mason Holgate is reportedly wanted by Nottingham Forest in the January transfer window amid his lack of appearances under Frank Lampard.

According to Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett, the newly-promoted side have enquired about a lot of players, but need to offload fringe players before signing new ones.

Holgate has made 145 appearances for the Toffees, but has found game time hard to come by this season, making just four appearances in the league.

Via Twitter, Dorsett wrote, “NFFC considering EFC Mason Holgate as one of a number of options to strengthen their defence. Holgate hasn’t played a Premier League game under manager Frank Lampard since August. Forest have been approached about numerous players, but may have to offload fringe players first.”

Sell him

Much like Forest, even Everton need to offload their fringe players to sign new ones and Holgate certainly falls into that category.

The 26-year-old may be a versatile player who can play at full-back, centre-back and midfield as well, but is not the one who can strengthen the first team in any of those areas.

If Everton are to avoid a relegation battle and perhaps go to the next level, they cannot have Holgate on their books and must look to cash in.

Everton

Forest have paid big sums of money to sign players over the summer so they clearly have the money to do deals in January.

However, if there is no market for Holgate, it’s pretty obvious that they will play the waiting game and get the Toffees to bring down his price.

These still are initial stages, but Holgate needs to go and could be followed out of the door by Yerry Mina who does not seem to have a future at Goodison Park.
