Ben Godfrey awful as Demarai Gray shines -Everton players ratings v Manchester United in FA Cup clash

Frank Lampard and his Everton side travelled to Old Trafford for the third round of the FA Cup to face Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on 6 January.

Everton and Lampard came into the fixture desperately needing a win, one which would see the former Chelsea boss’s job secured for another few weeks at least.

Nevertheless, despite a hard-fought battle throughout the 90 minutes, the Toffees lost 3-1 on the evening to an ultimately better Manchester United setup.

Everton

Goodison News rated the players out of 10 below…

Jordan Pickford – 5

Made a good stop from a long-range Rashford effort that bounced up at him awkwardly in the first half but didn’t have too much to do on the night, with luck, United won’t be eyeing up a move for him after his De Gea’s laughable error.

Seamus Coleman – 6

It’s hard not to love Coleman? He comes in and does a decent job whenever he’s needed to do so. The full-back constantly got forward and looked to exploit Ten Hag’s defence but he didn’t do enough to stop United’s second from creeping past him which let his performance down ever so slightly.

Vitalii Mykolenko – 5

Went missing at times on the massive Old Trafford pitch and was out of position for the United opener but this wasn’t helped by Godfrey taking the challenge of Rashford on by himself. When he did get the ball he tried to move things up the field for the Blues which made things testing for United.

Ben Godfrey – 2

Begged Rashford to take him on for Manchester United’s opener, one which he subsequently failed to defend. This set the tone for the rest of the game for Godfrey who struggled badly against a pacy United attack. To end his stinker he gave away a penalty for United’s third.

Conor Coady – 5

Grabbed the Blues’ opener and equaliser in a bit of calamitous good fortune from David de Gea but also put one in the back of his own net. This, unfortunately, plagued Coady’s night at Old Trafford.

James Tarkowski – 5

Booted the ball away to the opposition on multiple occasions in the first half and seemed to pass his way into trouble far too often, however, he stood firm and made things frustrating for United’s attack next to Coady.

Everton

Amadou Onana – 6

Battled hard for Everton’s opening goal on the night and linked up well with Gray in the first half. Always at the heart of everything the Toffees do right and deserves a better midfield around him. The only grape with Onana is that he loves a yellow card a bit too much.

Alex Iwobi – 6

Defensively he tried and tried again against a relentless United attack in the first half and looked calm and collected when in transition for Blues attacks. Unfortunately, Iwobi suffered what looks like a nasty injury at the start of the second half which brought his evening to an end on the stretcher, devastating stuff.

Idrissa Gana Gueye – 5

Looked rushed on the ball at times and failed to assert much dominance for the Blues in the engine room area of Old Trafford, not a great outing from Gueye that has become an all but too apparent sight this season, he’s not the player he once was.

Everton

Demarai Gray – 8

Looked like Everton’s best-attacking outlet from the outset and his wayward ball towards the United box got things going for the Blues’ equaliser on the evening. His final product let him down a bit but everything leading up to this was spot on, he’s starting to have a fantastic season and is our man of the match.

Neal Maupay – 4

Battled hard at times and despite him not being the fearsome forward all Toffees crave him to be, he did a lot of the dirty work for the Blues on 6 January. Nevertheless, Maupay was bought to score goals and he just isn’t doing this for the Blues.

Abdoulaye Doucouré (on for Iwobi, 50′) – 6

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (on for Maupay, 68′) – 5

Dwight McNeil (on for Coleman, 80′) – 5

Anthony Gordon (on for Mykolenko, 80′) – 5
