Viktor Gyokeres can make goals himself which is exactly “what Everton need” as the club prepare a major offer, according to Kevin Campbell.

According to TEAMtalk on Saturday (7 January) the Toffees are ready to make a cash plus players bid for the Coventry striker who is valued at £18million, with Ellis Simms potentially going the other way.

And despite the Swedish international being unproven in the Premier League Sky Sports pundit Campbell is in full support of shopping in the Championship where quality players are available.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News he said: “It may be underwhelming for a lot of people but sometimes you find gems.

“That Championship, let me tell you, has got a lot of good players in there.

“And this guy, he can score.

“He’s a good player. He’s strong, he can hold the ball up, and some of the goals he makes himself which, I tell you, is what Everton need, for him to do something that can nick a goal on his own.

“So I don’t see any problems with that.

“I know Ben Brereton Diaz has been linked with the club as well so Everton have to box clever. It may not be down to one player. They may have to sign two or three.

“If you were saying Everton needed spend £60million and they went and got three players for that, then you’re in business, you’ve got three guys up there who’re hungry.

“And that’s what you want, players who are hungry to make their mark.”

Everton are taken by Blackburn’s Brereton Diaz as well as Gyokeres but believe the latter is more obtainable, and are prepared to make a major push to land him ahead of Premier League rivals Brentford and Leeds.

If they are ready to let Simms leave to get the 24-year-old Coventry man in then they must be serious about him, following 29 league goals since the start of last season.

Frank Lampard could certainly do with some production like that as he looks to cling onto his job at Goodison Park.
