Chris Sutton: Frank Lampard could be sacked by Everton this week amid ‘massive pressure’ after loss v Southampton

Chris Sutton believes Frank Lampard could be sacked by Everton this week after their defeat to Southampton left them in the relegation zone.

The Toffees took the lead through Amadou Onana in the first half but two second half strikes from James Ward-Prowse made it four straight defeats at Goodison Park for Lampard’s side.

The result left Everton second from bottom only on goal difference and with a huge relegation six-pointer against West Ham set for next weekend, Sutton told BT Sport Score (14 January, 5:09pm) that he wouldn’t be shocked i Lampard was axed before then.

“I think Frank Lampard is under massive pressure,” he said.

“West Ham, there is an argument that both teams may go into that game (21 January) managerless.

“Frank had the backing of Moshiri in the week and that never bodes well. The result against a team who are bottom of the league, that’s a bad result for Frank.

“He’s got a terrible win rate, one of the worst in Everton’s history.

“But I feel for him because at the start of the season they sold their best striker and didn’t replace him.”

Excuses

The board have absolutely been the cause for Everton dwindling in recent years and being in this position, but to absolve Lampard of blame is just wrong.

He was a legendary player and nobody can take that away from him, but it’s quite clear that right now he isn’t cut out to be a Premier League manager and he is leading us down a path towards relegation.

We stayed up by the skin of our teeth last season because we had the quality that other teams around us didn’t have, but this year Everton are that team with no quality.

Our best players look like a shadow of themselves, and we haven’t got nearly enough goals in our side to fire us to safety.

Lampard will be thanked for uniting the fan base and keeping us in the division last season, but it’s time for him to go before it gets any worse and we run out of time to save ourselves again.
