Ian Wright shares new Everton owners verdict on Match of the Day after official statement

Ian Wright has suggested any potential investor may well be put off buying Everton after the club’s board were advised not to attend the Premier League fixture against Southampton.

The club released a statement ahead of the match at Goodison Park, which advised members of the board to not attend the match due to safety concerns.

Wright has since reacted to the news and believes any new owner could well be put off buying the club due to the “intimidating” behaviour.

“They’ve got a right to protest but it has to be done peacefully and what Everton are going through will be really frustrating but them protesting in that way and being intimidating is not going to help,” Wright said on Match of the Day (30m 20s, 14 January).

“They’re trying to talk about new owners coming into the football club, are they really going to want to come and manage a club like that.”

Too far

Saturday (14 January) was a low point in the history of Everton football club. At no point should any fan, player, manager or board member not be able to attend a match due to concerns surrounding their safety. We are all aware of the problems which currently engulf the club, and that it means a lot to a vast amount of people.

However, this has gone a step too far. The defeat to Southampton was damaging and the board will have to act to try and turn the Toffees’ season around. Frank Lampard seemed a defeated man after the game and could well be accepting of the impending decision which could well be coming his way.

Everton Frank Lampard

Sacking Lampard would be justified, but there will be little faith in the current decision-makers to turn things around or make the right appointment. Everything is a mess and the sad reality is that Everton will more than likely be a Championship team next season if nothing dramatically changed over the course of the next couple of weeks.
