Everton hold talks in London to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie

Everton have held transfer talks with Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie as the Toffees look to beat Newcastle to the Ecuador international, according to the Guardian USA.

Everton are yet to add to their squad but have been linked with West Ham striker Michail Antonio (talkSPORT, 16 January) and Villarreal forward Arnaut Danjuma over the past couple of days (Sky Sports, 17 January).

The Guardian USA have since revealed (print edition, page 45, 18 January) the Toffees held talks with 21-year-old Hincapie in London on Monday (16 January). It’s understood Leverkusen want him to stay until the summer at the very least.

Expensive

The versatile left-back is contracted to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2026, so it would command a sizable transfer fee to see him depart Germany. Everton are yet to kickstart their transfer business and it feels as if the board are potentially apprehensive when it comes to backing Frank Lampard.

This weekend’s fixture against West Ham United is looking like a do-or-die fixture for both Lampard and West Ham boss David Moyes. Both clubs have endured tough campaigns and it would not be a surprise to see an announcement from one of the clubs after the match.

Everton

It’s a mess at Goodison Park at present and the Toffees simply have to react soon when it comes to transfers or Lampard’s future. The uncertainty at the club will make it hard for the board to attract players to Merseyside – and at the moment reinforcements are essential.

Whatever the result this weekend, it simply has to be a turning point moving forward.
