Newcastle United ready Anthony Gordon announcement as Everton talks intensify

Newcastle United are on the “verge” of beating Chelsea to the signing of Everton attacker Anthony Gordon, according to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

Edwards has reported (24 January) the Magpies are now confident of beating Graham Potter’s side to the 21-year-old after having a £35million bid rejected last week.

It’s believed Gordon is keen on the move and that a deal could well be finalised in the “next few days” after talks between the two clubs progressed since last weekend.

It’s believed Newcastle are now hopeful an agreement can be announced after the first leg of their League Cup semi-final against Southampton on Tuesday.

Let him go

This is a move the Toffees need to sanction. Gordon has been a shadow of himself in the 2022/23 campaign and potentially needs a new challenge to reinvigorate his career. Furthermore, Everton are in desperate need of a financial boost and Newcastle’s offer could potentially allow for the Toffees’ to complete some transfer business of their own.

Realistically, it’s looking like a poor decision to not accept Chelsea’s bids for Gordon in the summer. The West London club were clearly keen on the attacking midfielder and the transfer fee could have been reinvested by Everton.

It’s been a tough couple of days for Everton with Frank Lampard being sacked and Arnaut Danjuma snubbing the Toffees for Tottenham (Marco Conterio, 24 January).

The board simply have to react and bring in some new recruits in the coming days and sanctioning an exit for Gordon could allow them to do just that. It promises to be an intriguing couple of days at Goodison Park.
