Viktor Gyokeres decided he is better at Coventry after strong Everton transfer links

Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres decided he is better off where he is after he was heavily linked with a move to Everton in the January transfer window.

With time running out towards the end of the window, the Toffees made an attempt to sign the Swedish striker who has scored 13 goals this season so far.

According to a report from The Mirror (3 February, page 62), he was tipped for a January transfer deadline-day move to Everton, but he decided to stay put.

Waste of window

It’s been an absolute waste of a transfer window, and it’s hard to believe that the club messed it up completely.

It became very clear that the Toffees needed to sign players in the January window to boost their survival hopes after a dreadful run of form.

All the other relegation-threatened clubs have bolstered their squad, but Everton were left behind. They chased several players but couldn’t get a deal done for any of them.

The closest they came to signing was Arnaut Danjuma. He completed his medical and was about to be officially announced, but he pulled the plug on the deal and moved to Tottenham Hotspur instead.

The timing of the sacking of Frank Lampard was also poor. The club waited and waited to make the call, and new manager Sean Dyche couldn’t have done anything with time running out.

They chased unrealistic targets, and it shows their lack of planning. What will hurt the club is that the already fragile squad is further weakened by the departure of Anthony Gordon, who joined Newcastle United.

The money was there to spend, but the club couldn’t attract players.
