Everton: Jurgen Klopp could unleash wildcard Liverpool defender in derby

Jurgen Klopp could opt to pick “wildcard” defender Nat Phillips to start against Everton in the Merseyside derby, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle.

Phillips has a strong chance to start against the Toffees with Liverpool’s recent poor defensive form, something the Blues will be looking to exploit at the back for the Reds.

Doyle confessed that it would be wise for Klopp to consider Phillips for the Merseyside derby on Monday evening (13 February).

Everton

“Jurgen Klopp could unleash wildcard option in Liverpool defence to surprise Everton,” said Doyle as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. (9 February)

“But just when he thought he was out, the latest injuries to Van Dijk and then Konate have pulled Phillips back in. And it would be wise for Klopp to consider his claims for Monday.

“The height of Phillips would offer obvious assistance to the latter issue, but what is often overlooked is his attitude that has so impressed Klopp and the coaching staff since stepping up to first-team duty, a calming influence that can lead by example, as was shown two years ago. His teammates respond to him.

“And that might well be what Liverpool need if, as is likely, Van Dijk isn’t quite ready for Monday. Phillips remains a Liverpool player – and, has been shown in the past, there is always a time and place for his qualities to be utilised.”

Everton

Crumbling.

There may have never been a better time to face Liverpool than right now for the Toffees, they look like a team short of ideas and crumbling in confidence.

Dyche’s arrival at Goodison Park alongside a mighty win against Arsenal will make Evertonians more confident than ever of getting some points at Anfield.

If Phillips is being touted as Liverpool’s saving grace then there isn’t much to worry about either, all signs are pointing towards a memorable night on Merseyside.

Everton still sit in an uncomfortable position in the Premier League and need to get results quickly, meaning the derby is in the must-win category for Dyche and co.

Two wins from two Premier League juggernauts, however, make things look a lot brighter for the Blues and this could be the case come Tuesday morning.

It will be interesting to see what lineup Dyche opts for in the game, with luck, it will be a similar team to the one that faced the Gunners.
