Ian Wright reacts to Seamus Coleman goal in Leeds United loss v Everton

Ian Wright credits Everton defender Seamus Coleman for fancying his luck to beat Illan Meslier in the Leeds United goal on Saturday, 18 February.

The Toffees ended up winning the game 1-0 and it was Coleman’s goal that proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Meslier was expecting a cross so left his near post unchecked and the right-back’s cross-cum-shot ended up creeping into the back of the net.

Wright said in the post-match show on Premier League Productions [18/02, 17:17], “Coleman took his chance and hit that in. There’s no shame in trying that. Delightful goal.”

Blunder

Meslier is a decent goalkeeper but these things are the basics and we’re baffled at how he managed to mess this one up.

He cannot allow his near post to be left open that way as there’s every chance the ball can creep in from any angle.

There are defenders dealing with the cross inside and he should then rush to punch or claim the ball if the cross is played.

Everton

Defensively, this side still seems to be all over the place and against Everton, they were shocking going forward as well.

Seamus Coleman deserves full credit for putting the ball in the back of the net and whether or not he meant it, the Toffees deserved their luck.

He went down as our Man of the Match as he also did a very good job keeping Willy Gnonto quiet and it was a classic rolling back-the-years performance for him.
