Everton board respond to fans over plans if ‘catastrophic’ relegation happens

Everton falling into the Championship would be “catastrophic” for the club, but they have a plan should the worst happen according to a new statement from the board.

The Toffees moved out of the relegation zone with a win over Leeds at Goodison Park (18 February) but are still firmly in a battle for their safety having claimed just five wins all season.

With the fans and the hierarchy at loggerheads over the state of the club, the board have released a 13-page statement which answers several of the issues at play currently including whether they have a plan for if the worst happens and the club go down.

“Falling out of the top flight would be catastrophic and the club was asked whether it had considered the consequences and drawn up a plan should the worst happen,” the Liverpool ECHO wrote (22 February) while sharing the contents of the document.

“It said: “The club plans for all scenarios based on all potential Premier League final positions, given the significant financial implications league placings have”.

“The club’s ambitions are loftier than survival though, with it stating there is in fact a vision “to re-establish Everton amongst football’s elite”.”

Problems

The truth of the situation is that this Everton board don’t deserve to get themselves out of a hole, because the way they have run this club deserves a punishment.

However Everton has to come first always, and that means we have to survive in the Premier League not just for the fans but also for the good of the club in the long term.

There are no details shared about the plan in place should we be relegated, but one would assume that it won’t be great reading for any fans and an immediate return to the Premier League would be very difficult to achieve.

Journalist Joe Thomas called it “catastrophic” and that seems like the most apt word for the situation. But thankfully Sean Dyche has come in and seems to know exactly what he’s doing, which begs the question why he wasn’t brought in earlier.

There is a long way to go still and we’re not safe by any stretch right now, but at least there is a bit of hope around the place now after recent games.
