Everton: Jordan Pickford could still leave club in near future despite new contract

Jordan Pickford could still leave Everton in the “near future” despite signing a new and improved contract at Goodison Park, according to Liverpool Echo journalist Joe Thomas.

The journalist confessed that if Pickford did choose to leave Goodison, Everton are now in a much stronger position to do a deal that suits the club.

Pickford agreed to fresh terms this week in a contract that could see him stay on Merseyside until June 2027, something that may not be a foregone conclusion just yet.

“Negotiations over a new deal began under Lampard and, with Everton’s top flight status at threat once again, it would have been difficult to criticise him for waiting until the summer to commit,” said Thomas as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. (25 February)

“Instead he has signed fresh terms. This does not mean he will not leave, but if he does in the near future, Everton will be in a far stronger position to do a deal that suits the club.”

Anything is possible.

Anything is possible in the crazy world of Premier League football but it’s pretty unlikely that Pickford would choose to leave Everton now after signing a new deal.

Relegation to the Championship could be a solid reason for this to change but even that is starting to look like a thing of the past since the arrival of Sean Dyche.

Hopefully, Pickford is here to stay at Goodison Park and moving forward to the new Everton Stadium, goalkeepers and talents like him don’t come around often.

Pickford is a world-class shot-stopper, a position that is agonisingly tough to fill in the modern game and one Everton has in their starting XI.

Thomas isn’t wrong though in saying that the Blues now hold the cards in any potential future transfer for Pickford and they would be able to drive up his price tag now with his new and improved deal.

This is likely to have been in the thinking of Kevin Thelwell and co when conducting the Pickford deal but everyone at the club will be hoping the goalkeeper sees out his contract until the very end.
