Everton: Graeme Souness launches accusation at Dwight McNeil as Sky Sports show footage v Nottingham Forest

Graeme Souness accused Everton ace Dwight McNeil of diving to win a penalty as footage was shown live on Sky Sports in the clash against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

McNeil was brought down in the box by Forest maestro Jonjo Shelvey in what looked to be a stonewall penalty, however, Souness wasn’t impressed.

Demarai Gray converted the resulting penalty to put the Toffees ahead in a frantic first half which saw three goals scored at the City Ground.

“I think he dives a bit but Shelvey has given him too much of an invitation,” said Souness live on Sky Sports Premier League (02:52 pm, 5 March).

“Did he deserve him to dangle the leg a bit there? I don’t think so. There’s an element of diving in this but you can understand it. The invitation is there so you take it.”

Classic Souness.

Souness loves a little dig at Everton, doesn’t he? McNeil was simply doing what every single attacker does in the English top flight and if anything it was more of a clumsy tackle from Shelvey.

The backhanded compliment from the Scot is his standard rhetoric towards the Toffees and you’d expect nothing less from a former Liverpool player.

McNeil himself has been revitalised since the arrival of Sean Dyche at Goodison Park and he is starting to become a bit of a handful for Premier League defenders.

Alongside Demarai Gray up top, the Blues could be onto something here, at least until the summer transfer window opens and the club can invest in a proper forward.

It will be interesting to see if Dyche continues to opt for this new-look attack in the coming weeks and months, with luck, it will provide the Merseysiders with plenty more goals.

Let’s face it, anything is better than the ghost that is Neal Maupay right now.
