Alan Shearer names James Tarkowski in Premier League team of the week after Everton 1-0 win v Brentford

Alan Shearer has named James Tarkowski in his Premier League team of the week after Everton climbed out of the relegation zone with a 1-0 win over Brentford.

The Toffees claimed a third win in seven games since Sean Dyche took charge and pushed up to 15th in the table, but still just one point clear of the relegation zone with the victory.

All three wins have been 1-0, and ex-Burnley ace Tarkowski has been part of every starting lineup since Dyche came to the club, but his performance on Saturday (11 March) has earned him a place in the official Premier League team of the week.

Selected by Shearer as a member of the back-four, Tarkowski was the only representative for Everton as they claimed three points thanks to Dwight McNeil’s goal in the first minute of the game.

Quality

Defensively so far this season for Everton, there is an argument that James Tarkowski has been the player of the season so far.

Between him and Conor Coady, Everton had looked strong defensively at different stages of the season but in recent games where Coady has been dropped in favour of Michael Keane, it’s clear Tarkowski has been quality despite that.

Everton

His performances have been fantastic, his leadership has been evident and he’s chipping in with being an attacking threat at set-pieces too.

Against Brentford he was strong, athletic and led by example and firmly deserves his spot in this team of the week, so it’s great to see him getting his plaudits.

With Keane named in Harry Redknapp’s team of the week for his performance in the same game, it shows how good Everton were in this game and shows the victory was deserved. Now we need consistency and to continue to find a way to stay out of the relegation zone.
