Everton total number of fines for referee abuse this season disclosed in Premier League table

Everton players and coaching staff should be embarrassed after the total number of fines each club has had to pay for abusing officials this season was revealed.

Abuse of officials has been a hot talking point of late after Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was caught grabbing hold of a touchline official in a recent Premier League match, and Aleksandar Mitrovic was given a red card for shoving referee Chris Kavanagh in the FA Cup on Sunday (19 March).

Incidents such as these have highlighted that respect towards referees is at an all-time low, and it seems that Everton have been one of the worst culprits this campaign, having paid the third-highest number of fines out of the 20 Premier League clubs.

The numbers, as shared by GiveMeSport, revealed that Everton have had to fork out a total of £115,000 in fines this season, a number that is only beneath Manchester United and Arsenal.

Considering that Newcastle, Brentford, Bournemouth and Southampton haven’t even been fined this season, and Brighton have equated just £15,000 of fines, the Toffees’ three-figure total isn’t something to be proud of.

It is understandable that tensions can rise in the heat of the moment and that this can often boil over in the referee’s direction, but this is not any excuse to act in hostility towards them.

The more worrying statistic, as a whole, is the £932,500 total fines that Premier League clubs have had to pay for abuse towards referees this season.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Hopefully, under Sean Dyche, the club can start to make a marked improvement in their treatment of officials.

Yes, it is frustrating when controversial decisions go against your team or VAR intervene unnecessarily, but Mitrovic’s actions at the weekend have shown what abuse of referees can culminate in.
