Alex Iwobi admits he was ‘Rattled’ by Everton exit rumours amid Fenerbahce interest

Alex Iwobi has admitted he was “Rattled” by rumours linking him with an Everton exit to join Fenerbahce, speaking to The Beautiful Game podcast.

The Toffees midfielder has been among the club’s best performers over the last 12 months, and is currently out of contract at Goodison Park in 2024 which saw links for a late exit after the January transfer window.

But the Nigeria international has revealed that he knew nothing about the links and insisted that while it’s nice to hear that other clubs are interested, he has no intention of moving to Turkey any time soon.

“Nope [I didn’t hear anything],” he said (27 March). “First I posted on Instagram and just saw bare [a lot] of comments and I was thinking, ‘What?’.

“I didn’t know anything about it. Then I’m getting mentioned on Twitter by my boys that I might be going Turkey, but I was like no man. The only way I’m going to Turkey is for my teeth or my hairline [laughs].

“No, I was a bit rattled. It’s always nice to get interest from another team but nah, just focus on football.”

Phew

Fenerbahce are a team that are historically quite big and Turkey has regularly been able to attract talented players to their league.

However, it always seemed too late for Iwobi to leave in January considering the window was closed in England and we wouldn’t have been able to replace him.

Everton

His contract situation undoubtedly means a conversation will need to be had at some point, but the fact he clearly has no interest in a move makes things a lot easier for Everton to navigate.

Iwobi is clearly focused on trying to keep Everton in the Premier League for now, and after that we’ll find out what his true intentions are for the future.

Hopefully he will be convinced to sign a new long-term deal and stick around because he is a true fan favourite around these sides and makes us a better team when he’s involved, so it would be a really positive sign if he stuck around.
