Dean Saunders clashes with Jason Cundy over Everton live on talkSPORT late on Thursday night

Dean Saunders and Jason Cundy have clashed over the chances of Everton securing Premier League safety this season, live on talkSPORT.

The Toffees currently sit 15th in the Premier League table on 26 points, just two points off 18th place and three points off 20th.

In what has been a hugely competitive campaign in the bottom half of the table, only four points separate Crystal Palace in 12th and Southampton in 20th.

“We should really be talking about how nervous the bottom eight feel,” Saunders said live on talkSPORT.

And Cundy replied: “Do you know what? If you’re an Everton fan, I don’t think you’re nervous.” Saunders fired back: “Yeah you are,” with Cundy quickly responding: “No, no you’re not.”

The duo continued the debate as Saunders noted: “Scraped out of it last year, a couple of defeats and you’re in it, with Cundy concluding: “You look at the bottom three, I can’t see Everton getting dragged in there.”

Toffees worry

There are certainly cases for both sides of the argument, with Everton now flirting with relegation for two seasons in a row.

Having narrowly stayed up last time out, fans were confident that a similar situation would not be repeated, but a poor start under Frank Lampard has them worried once again.

The near future may also strike fear into supporters, with the next two matches coming against Tottenham and Manchester United, with Newcastle and Manchester City making the trip to Goodison shortly.

But on a much more positive note, new boss Sean Dyche has helped turn things around, with Everton looking much stronger under the former Burnley manager.

He has plenty of experience in relegation fights, and has already picked up some impressive results in his brief spell in charge, including beating Arsenal and drawing with Chelsea.

The manager has also created a sense of unity around Goodison, with everyone now pulling in the right direction in what will be a very tricky fight for safety.
