Sky Sports journalist drops Everton into Frank Lampard and Chelsea verdict as new development emerges

Sky Sports journalist Peter Smith has dropped Everton into the discussion involving Frank Lampard’s impending announcement as Chelsea caretaker manager.

The Premier League legend was sacked from his job at Goodison Park in January 2023 after a poor run of results.

He was also sacked as Chelsea manager two years earlier, but now looks set to return to the Stamford Bridge dugout on a short-term basis, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Everton

When discussing Lampard’s potential playing style at Chelsea, Smith wrote on Sky Sports: “Expect an instant switch back to his preferred 4-3-3 set-up.

“Also expect Lampard to try to use this unexpected opportunity to prove to any potential suitors in the summer that he can play attractive, modern, front-foot football, having had to scrap and fight for survival at Everton.”

The comments come amid an update from Romano on Twitter, stating: “Documents are ready and all set to be signed for Frank Lampard as Chelsea caretaker manager – just waiting on club statement. Lampard will be under contract until the end of the season. Ashley Cole will be part of the coaching staff.”

Big decision

The impending announcement to re-hire Lampard at Stamford Bridge has been met with raised eyebrows, with not many clubs making such a decision, particularly given how it wasn’t very long ago when he was removed from his role.

But the manager will be raring to go having been out of a job since January following his dismissal at Everton, with Lampard desperate to prove he has what it takes to manage at the very top level.

The Toffees meanwhile have moved on from their struggles under Lampard with a new lease of life under Sean Dyche, who has definitely steadied the ship at Goodison Park.

Everton fans won’t be too concerned at all with how Lampard does in West London, with matters on Merseyside much more important, primarily Premier League survival.

Unfortunately for the neutral, Lampard has just missed out on a reunion with the Toffees, with Everton only just coming up against Chelsea last month, when Graham Potter was still the club’s manager.
