Everton player ratings v Manchester United: Seamus Coleman stinks, Jordan Pickford stars

Everton continued their wretched away run with a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, 8 April.

Scott McTominay scored the opening goal and Anthony Martial secured the points due to Seamus Coleman’s error in the second half.

Everton are 16th but can end the weekend in the drop zone with other teams still having to play their games.

Everton
Everton manager Sean Dyche

Jordan Pickford – 8

An outstanding performance from the England international as he kept his side in the game despite United having an attempt every other minute in the first half. It was one-way traffic and without Pickford, the scoreline would’ve not flattered the Toffees. He will be delighted with his effort.

Seamus Coleman -2

Made a catastrophic error in the concession of the second goal and that sealed the game for the hosts. Despite being outplayed for most of the game, the Toffees were in it until this moment. For an experienced defender, this is unacceptable and Dyche will surely have been fuming at the incident.

Michael Keane – 6

Won all of his attempted duels, be it in the air or on the ground and it was another spirited performance from the former Manchester United player. Keane has upped us game many levels under Dyche and was undoubtedly their best defender on Saturday.

James Tarkowski – 4

Not been at the level against United as he has in the past few weeks under Dyche. Tarkowski may have set the bar too high for himself but this performance wasn’t worth writing home about. He lost 50 per cent of his aerial duels and didn’t do quite as much to avoid the opponents from having shots on goal.

Ben Godfrey – 2

Hopefully, the experiment of playing him at left-back comes to an end as he once again had a torrid game out there. He completed just six passes in the half he played and was caught out of possession time and again. He deserved to be booted off at the break and it’ll be surprising to see him start for Everton in the next game.

Everton

Demarai Gray – 4

Struggled to get involved in the game and it comes as no surprise that he was one of the least involved Everton players. Completing just 12 passes and one out of six crosses is not the return that Dyche would’ve wanted from the former Leicester attacker.

Alex Iwobi – 7

Another standout performer for the Toffees was the Nigerian. With Abdoulaye Doucoure unavailable, Dyche decided to move Iwobi into a central role and he absolutely excelled there. Bruno Fernandes played deeper and was in the Everton midfielder’s pocket for most of the contest. Was unfortunate to end up on the losing side.

Idrissa Gueye – 7

Was a tank defensively and did his role of trying to stop attacks from being created in the middle and final thirds. He won 80 per cent of his duels on the ground and was a nightmare to deal with for the United players. They managed to pick up the three points, but Gueye had a tremendous game.

Everton

Amadou Onana – 6

An energetic display from the Belgian and a performance that he can take some heart from. He would’ve liked to influence the game more than he did but it’s not one that will be keeping him down in the dumps.

Dwight McNeil – 6

Had a good game on the left flank as he was constantly closing the opponents down and did his bit while tracking back as well. He would’ve liked to be more accurate with his crosses but he’s getting into the right positions and that’s something Dyche will be happy about.

Ellis Simms – 3

A disappointing game for the 22-year-old who was given a rare Premier League start to prove his worth. With the Toffees spending most of it without the ball, one would’ve expected Simms to drop deeper to get more involved but that did not happen. He’s unlikely to start in the next game after this performance.

Vitalii Mykolenko – 4

James Garner – 5

Tom Davies – 3

Neal Maupay – 3
