Everton given ‘very difficult’ transfer verdict on Amadou Onana by Fabrizio Romano amid Arsenal, Newcastle and Chelsea interest

Everton will find it “very difficult” to keep midfield star Amadou Onana at the club this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Belgium international has been attracting transfer interest from some of the biggest clubs in England and now Europe, with CBS journalist Ben Jacobs reporting on 18 April that Atletico Madrid had joined Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle in the picture.

He had suggested that the £60million-rated Toffee was not necessarily the top target for any of the teams that like him, with Declan Rice expected to attract major attention, but Romano has provided an update that isn’t encouraging.

In his Caught Offside daily update on Wednesday morning (19 April) he added to Jacobs’ report, saying: “Everton are going to find it very difficult to keep hold of Amadou Onana this summer.”

Bleak

Realistically it would have been hard to keep Onana at Goodison Park for a long time if he developed into the player that Everton hoped for.

But one season on Merseyside would be a disappointingly short spell for the headline arrival of the previous summer window.

Having beaten West Ham to his £33million signing it was arguably the only time in the past two years where the club has managed to come out on top in the race for a sought-after target.

It is all going to come down to the player, unless the hierarchy push him towards a big money move to once again try to make a dent in the club’s huge losses, and while he has turned down interest in one window it might not be the same story a second time around.

There is no doubting his connection to the Everton fans already but if he narrowly escapes relegation at Goodison Park and then is offered the chance to play in the Champions League, possibly with the Premier League champions, it would be a surprise if he wasn’t interested.
